Best Answer: Fragmentation is always a problem with hard drives. The more you save, delete, move your files, the more your hard drive will suffer. So I would say a defrag program is essential to keep your computer in shape. Windows defrag by itself its pretty good. It will get the job done and you will notice that the speed to access your files will improve. Other programs such as perfectdisk, diskeeper, o&o will have more features such a scheduled defragmentation and other features that will help your computer. It always depends on what the user likes and feels comfortable with.

Someone might like this defrag program and swear by it but another person might hate it. Now, different programs sometimes have different ways to arrange or 'defrag' your files in the hard drive. Some might put the files you access the most in the inner core of the hard drive as the speeds there are faster than files in the outer core.

Windows defrag doesn't do this but others do. In the past I have tried perfectdisk, diskeeper o&o, ashampoo and the list goes on. But I always seem to go back to diskeeper. Some people like it, some people don't. Does it work? Yes, it does work.

In fact, I defrag my hard drive daily with diskeeper. I don't even know when my hard drive is being defragmenting because I scheduled it to run on my background. I don't notice any decrease in performance while my hard drive is being degramented and it is definetely faster than having a fragmented hard drive. 'My experience with the expensive defrag utilities like Diskeeper & Perfect Disk is that they tend to be large and resource hungary' I don't know about Perfectdisk, but I use Diskeeper and it's not resource hungry at all.

It's a fine program with a superb automatic defragmenting mode. In the autodefrag mode, it will run in the background, and when fragmentation has crossed a threshold it will defrag quietly, using hardly any resources. If the system needs the resources for something else, then it will immediately suspend operations. Infact, it is so transparent that you don't even feel it's presence. But it does a great job, and you don't have to worry anymore about manually defragging the drives. BTW, fragmentation has nothing to do with the size of the drives, but rather the way in which the windows file system (FAT/NTFS) operates. Actually, defrag is useful, especially with larger hard drives.

You see, yes, it was made when space was limited, but the effect carries over What defragging does, is move all the files and pieces of a program physically closer together on the disk, so that it hast to make fewer revolutions to read all the data, and therefore makes applications load faster. And while you're probably a LOT safer using the built-in defragger, there are a few applications that will do it for you, most of them will just add a shortcut to the actual built-in one, but in my Sources i stuck a google search, and there are a few bits of software you can check out and make a decision. Each person has his/her own perception of which application is better than another, but there are standard characteristics evaluated for each product type. For instance, defragmenters are evaluated for speed, fragmentation levels after fragmentation, the ability to defragment in the background/real-time, and the ability to even prevent fragmentation. On a side note: Windows' defragmenter was originally a bare-bones copy of Diskeeper, though the two have been largely developed individually for the past decade or so, with Diskeeper being the 'advanced' third-party option. Hope this helps, John.

First,.ON. point- I don't know about Vista/7, but previous Windows defraggers pretty much required you to shut down not only computer use, but computer non-use as well. Time consumption was mentioned by the editor but there's also dipping into display settings to shut down your screen saver as well.

Combine the time saved using CNET downloads with the time and hassle to allow it to even work through Windows. You can now complete a necessary task many people used to fear and loathe (not necessarily in Las Vegas). Quality of a finished process will always remain a debate around here. Some have advantages, for example I think Auslogics is the one that has a bonus download to override the screen saver, should you forget to kill it.

I also believe Smart Defrag is supposedly the one that is more friendly to background-running. SD's problem is it loads at start-up and will continue to lurk after you're finished.

Simple fix, obviously, but an annoyance that some apps are designed to stop. Windows has the worst of all worlds, considering you won't use it the way you need to if you're relying on it alone.
